The Polish Society of Calorimetry and Thermal Analysis named after Wojciech Świętosławski (PTKAT) was established in 1985 on the initiative of prof. Wojciech Zielenkiewicz, then director of the Institute of Physical Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw.
The aim of our Society, in accordance with the statute approved on November 18, 1985, is to promote and develop calorimetry, thermochemistry and thermal analysis by organizing conferences, scientific meetings and training courses, publishing and cooperating with other scientific societies. The Society operates throughout the country, and the funds for its activities come from membership fees, statutory activities and obtained subsidies.
Statutory conferences of the Society, along with the General Assembly of Society members, are held regularly every three years in Zakopane. Foreign guests also take part in them, e.g. as part of multilateral symposia, e.g. Czech-Hungarian-Slovak-Polish symposium. Under the auspices of PTKAT, Prof. Janusz Pysiak and Prof. Barbara Pacewska organized in 1977-2016 eleven national seminars. named after Prof. St. Bretsznajder with the participation of foreign guests. Papers presented at the PTKAT conferences and the Seminar are published after review in Special Issues of the "Journal of Thermal Analysis and Calorimetry". In cooperation with the Polish Chemical Society (PTChem), four Microsymposia devoted to calorimetry and thermal analysis were organized.
The Polish Society of Calorimetry and Thermal Analysis was the organizer of the European Symposium for Thermal Analysis and Calorimetry (ESTAC), which was held in 2006 in Krakow, and the Congress of the International Confederation for Thermal Analysis and Calorimetry (ICTAC), which was organized on-line in 2021. PTKAT is also a co-organizer of the conference "Journal of Thermal Analysis and Calorimetry Conference and Joint Czech-Hungarian-Polish-Slovakian Thermonalytical Conference", which took place in 2017 and 2019.
In order to promote calorimetry, thermochemistry and thermal analysis, our Society has been organizing since 1996, initiated by Prof. AGH Barbara Małecka and Prof. Andrzej Małecki, Schools and Seminars of Thermal Analysis which aim at familiarizing participants with research methods, methods of conducting measurements, the possibilities of using research equipment and the correct interpretation of the data obtained. Schools and Seminars, traditionally held in Zakopane, are addressed primarily to doctoral students, young scientists and employees of research laboratories in industry, and lectures and seminars are conducted by recognized national specialists. So far, seven Schools and two Seminars have been organized, which gathered a total of several hundred participants.
